Chinook

The CH-47F Chinook is a versatile, twin-engine, tandem rotor heavy-lift helicopter. It has a top speed of 170 knots and is faster than many contemporary utility or attack helicopters.

Chinook’s primary role includes troop movements, logistics, battlefield support and assistance to the community during severe weather events. In June 2022, the Army CH-47F Chinook fleet increased to 14 aircraft.

CA49 encompasses 5 Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UASs) platform types designed to enhance the Australian Defence Force’s Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities. CA49 is expected to grow to approximately 10 platform types by 2025 based on current acquisition program goals.

The Shadow Tactical UAS is a large UAS operated by 20 Regiment Royal Australian Artillery. The Shadow is capable of long-endurance flights and carries advanced sensors for ISR and target acquisition missions.

Improved Embarked Logistics Support Helicopter

The Improved Embarked Logistics Support Helicopter Project (SEA9100 Phase 1) will expand and rationalise the Royal Australian Navy’s support and logistics helicopter fleet through the Foreign Military sales acquisition of additional MH-60R Seahawk helicopters. 

The Project will acquire 12 helicopters for operation on the Navy Amphibious and Afloat Support fleet. An additional helicopter will also be acquired to remediate a fleet loss on operations in October 2021, expanding the MH-60R fleet to 36 in total.

This project will remediate selected ADF radios and encryption devices to meet upcoming algorithm obsolescence. This will ensure ongoing availability of secure communications in support of Defence operations, including through interoperability with key partner communications and intelligence networks.
