Tasmanians flocked to the Defence Force Recruiting (DFR) stand at this year’s Royal Hobart Regatta, keen to find out about the variety of jobs available in Army, Navy and the Air Force.
The display provided an opportunity for the public to mingle with serving members of the three services and explore the unique enlistment pathways that can be tailored to their individual needs.
Leading Seaman Marine Technician ─ Submariner Jackson Cashion joined DFR Tasmania about a month ago and said there had been a lot of engagement during the Regatta, held from February 6-8.
“We’ve seen a broad range of people from all ages coming up to the stand, including parents enquiring for their kids who are approaching the end of high school,” he said.
“For example, I spoke to a 16-year-old girl who was looking to structure her studies through the Australian Defence Force Academy in Canberra.”
A positive personal experience with DFR inspired Leading Seaman Cashion, who grew up in Hobart, to apply for a posting to the Tasmanian office.
“It was a great experience talking to people in uniform and even jumping on HMAS Parramatta for a sea ride as part of the recruitment process,” he said.
“DFR attended my school and I eventually met a guy who later became my mentor and has stayed in touch with me since then.
“At the time, he was doing the job I currently do, so he encouraged me through the process and we still catch up every few years.
“I’m looking forward to being able to share the experience I had with other people who are interested in joining Defence.”
