Wing Commander Michael Lyden has officially passed command of the Aeronautical Information Services – Air Force (AIS-AF) to Wing Commander Ross Mitchell in a ceremony at Victoria Barracks.
The transition marks a pivotal moment for AIS-AF, an essential service that provides critical aeronautical information to support the ADF.
After leading the service for the past two-and-a-half years, Wing Commander Lyden addressed the team for the final time during the January 13 event.
“It has been an honour working with you and leading such a dedicated team who delivers top-quality, first-class products for the war fighter,” Wing Commander Lyden said.
“The shared experiences, getting to know each other and the bonds we’ve forged will stay with me always.
“I am proud to pass this responsibility to Wing Commander Mitchell, whose leadership I’m sure will continue to trust the team and champion the service into the future.”
Wing Commander Mitchell, known for his strategic focus and commitment to team morale, took the opportunity to address his new command.
“Firstly, I’d like to say thank you. It is with deep humility that I step into this role,” Wing Commander Mitchell said.
“I promise to honour the legacy of those who came before me, and I am committed to each of you – to your growth, your wellbeing, and to our mission. Together, we will continue the proud tradition of excellence that defines this service.”
Founded on July 31, 1970, after a series of major aircraft accidents in the 1960s, AIS-AF has evolved to play a crucial role in the ADF by delivering accurate and timely aeronautical information.
The team produces more than 240 publications each year, including maps, charts and digital products that support ADF aviation platforms worldwide. These resources are essential for safe and efficient operations, updated every 28 days as part of the Aeronautical Information Regulation and Control cycle.
AIS-AF’s workforce is a diverse blend of uniformed ADF, Australian Public Service staff and personnel from the Australian Geospatial Intelligence Organisation, all dedicated to maintaining high-quality information. The service has embraced digital transformation, moving from paper-based publications to advanced digital solutions to meet the growing needs of Defence.
Looking ahead, AIS-AF is embracing innovation with projects looking towards agile operations through to streamline product delivery, ensuring it continues to support ADF operations both locally and globally.
As the leadership transition concludes, the service remains poised for future success under Wing Commander Mitchell’s guidance, ensuring continued excellence in a rapidly evolving military landscape.
