Joint Logistics Command

Joint Logistics Command (JLC) is headed by a 2-star officer, Commander Joint Logistics (CJLOG) – Rear Admiral Ian Murray, RAN.

JLC Vision: Joint Logistics Command is trusted, adaptive and performance leading in the provision of military logistics fundamental to the success of our Nation’s warfighters.

JLC Mission: Enable Australian Defence Force operations and readiness through adaptive, effective and efficient military logistics.

Rear Admiral Ian Murray, RAN

Rear Admiral Ian Murray

Rear Admiral Ian Murray was educated in Sydney and joined the Navy in January 1986. A graduate of the first Defence Academy class, he went on to serve at sea as a Supply Officer onboard the hydrographic ship HMAS Flinders, and then as commissioning Deputy Supply Officer of HMAS Anzac and Supply Officer of HMAS Newcastle. During his time on board Newcastle he deployed to the Northern Arabian Gulf enforcing UN sanctions against Iraq. Ashore he has served as the Integrated Logistics System Manager for Oberon Class submarines, graduated from the Army Command & Staff College at Fort Queenscliff, worked as the Fleet’s Human Resource Manager and has undertaken a two year posting with the Ministry of Defence in the United Kingdom, focused on supply chain improvement projects.

In 2008 he was appointed as the Director of Navy Logistics following promotion to Captain. In 2009 he joined Headquarters Joint Operations Command as the Director of Logistics Operations (J43). Following completion of the Defence and Strategic Studies Course in 2013 he was promoted to Commodore and posted as the Director General of Support (J1/J4) at Joint Operations Command. In 2017 he joined Joint Logistics Command as Director General Logistics Systems, and in 2018 he became Deputy Commander Joint Logistics and Director General Strategic Logistics.

Rear Admiral Murray was appointed to his current role as Commander Joint Logistics (Strategic J4) and Head Defence Fuel Supply Chain on 28 June 2019.

Rear Admiral Murray is a previous Chairperson of Navy Canteens and is serving as a Director of Defence Bank Ltd. He is a Certified Professional of the Australian Human Resources Institute, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport Australia and a Graduate of the Australian Company Directors Course. He holds a Bachelor of Arts (Econ), Graduate Diploma in Human Resource Management, Master of Defence Studies, Master of Arts and Master of Business Administration.

Rear Admiral Murray is married to Katie, who is a physiotherapist originally from England. They have three children, Oliver 21, Lydia 18 and Gus 16. Travelling, cycling and rugby are keen interests.
