The Pilot Training System (PTS) provides the ADF with a fixed-wing pilot training capability. The PTS delivers all aspects of initial Pilot and Qualified Flying Instructor training.
Undergraduate pilots train at No 1 Flying Training School in Victoria and No 2 Flying Training School in Western Australia where they develop the skills and knowledge required to progress onto advanced military aircraft such as:
- Fighter aircraft;
- Surveillance aircraft
- Transport aircraft; and
The PTS is sustained through a total logistics support arrangement with prime contractor Lockheed Martin Australia, with support from sub-contractors Pilatus (PC-21 Original Equipment Manufacturer) for engineering and supply services, and Jet Aviation for aircraft and life support equipment maintenance services.
The PTS includes 49 Pilatus PC-21 aircraft, 7 Flight Training Devices and a multi-faceted Learning Environment. The PC-21 is a turboprop advanced trainer with a stepped tandem cockpit. The PTS also provides support to the Roulette display team, Joint Terminal Attack Controller training and Air Warfare Centre operations.
The PC-21 are based at RAAF Base East Sale in Victoria; RAAF Base Pearce in Western Australia; RAAF Base Edinburgh in South Australia and RAAF Base Williamtown in New South Wales. The PC-21 is the world’s most advanced pilot training aircraft.
