The AIR2025 Phase 6 project will deliver a comprehensive redesign and upgrade of the Jindalee Operational Radar Network (JORN). JORN consists of three high-frequency radars located at Longreach, Queensland, Alice Springs, Northern Territory and Laverton, Western Australia with an operations centre located at Edinburgh, South Australia.
The new JORN capability is being developed solely in Australia, by Australian Industry, with support from Defence Science and Technology Group. It represents a complex hardware and software development and integration undertaking that will improve the performance of JORN. It will replace most of the radar and frequency management system hardware, and the information and communication technology hardware. A new open software architecture and modern user interface will be integrated to provide flexibility and enable efficient future enhancement.
The AIR2025 Phase 6 prime acquisition contract and the ongoing JORN sustainment contract were awarded to BAE Systems Australia. The radar network is used by the Australian Defence Force (ADF) for surveillance of aircraft and surface vessels.
