National Airfields Capital Works - Western Australia

Overview

The purpose of the National Airfields Capital Works - Western Australia (WA) project is to provide major maintenance of aircraft pavements, airfield lighting and related airfield drainage at RAAF Base Curtin and RAAF Base Learmonth in WA.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Works (PWC) agreed for Defence to pursue an exemption, received on Thursday 30 November 2023.

Minister for Finance approval of Defence’s request, for exemption from referral to the PWC, is anticipated Q1 2024.

Community information

Consultation will occur with the civilian airport operator, Regional Airport Management Services, who operate the civilian terminal at RAAF Base Learmonth for the Exmouth Shire Council.

This plan will seek to minimise impact on airline operations, including emergency services providers (such as the Royal Flying Doctor Service), and civil airlines.

The airfield at RAAF Base Curtin is only used by Defence. Defence plan to close the airfield, under a Notice to Airmen, when works commence.

Project details

This project will resurface selected end of life aircraft pavements and replace associated airfield lighting at RAAF Base Curtin and RAAF Base Learmonth. Works are currently planned from mid-2024 to 2028.

Construction camp accommodation will be provided either on base, or in town, to minimise effects on tourism and the local community.

CPB Contractors has been selected for the provision of constructability advice and staging advice for the Airside Method of Working Plan in the development phase.
