Naval Shipbuilding and Sustainment Group

The Naval Shipbuilding and Sustainment Group (NSSG) is the dedicated delivery agent for the naval shipbuilding and sustainment enterprise, responsible for providing naval capability acquisition and sustainment.

In partnership with the Royal Australian Navy, the Naval Shipbuilding and Sustainment Group delivers maritime capability and is the Australian Government’s policy lead for enabling a sustainable, national, sovereign shipbuilding industry and workforce.

Divisions

Submarines Division

Submarines Division contributes to the delivery of an enduring, potent and agile submarine capability that is vital to Australia’s national security.

Spanning submarine acquisition and sustainment, combat systems and capability enhancements, Submarines Division partners with the Australian Submarine Agency and the Royal Australian Navy to deliver submarines, their support systems, and the associated sovereign industrial base.

Major Surface Combatants and Combat Systems Division

Major Surface Combatants and Combat Systems Division is accountable for the continuous development and delivery of all major surface combatant vessels, and asset management through the life of the Royal Australian Navy’s surface fleet combat systems. This includes updates, upgrades and the introduction into service of new warfare systems. 

The division works in collaboration with Naval Construction Branch through the build phase of projects, with Maritime Sustainment Division to deliver initial sustainment solutions, and across the Naval Shipbuilding and Sustainment Group and Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group to deliver and support integrated combat systems.

Patrol Boats and Specialist Ships Division

Patrol Boats and Specialist Ships Division is responsible for the continuous development and delivery of all minor and specialist maritime vessels and patrol boats.

The division works in collaboration with Maritime Sustainment Division for the delivery of initial sustainment solutions, with Naval Construction Branch through the build phase of projects, and with Major Surface Combatants and Combat Systems to supply specialist vessels for maritime undersea surveillance projects and mine countermeasures.

Maritime Sustainment Division

Maritime Sustainment Division delivers maritime in-service support to the Royal Australian Navy, the Australian Army and Defence’s International Policy Division, as well as new maritime capability for Government. The division’s workforce is comprised of Australian Public Service and Australian Defence Force members, combined with an industry workforce supporting naval assets based around the Royal Australian Navy’s major ports.

Waterfront and Continuous Naval Shipbuilding and Sustainment Division

Waterfront and Continuous Naval Shipbuilding and Sustainment (W&CNSS) Division is responsible for leading the whole-of-government approach to delivering the objectives of the continuous naval shipbuilding and sustainment Enterprise. 

W&CNSS Division coordinates the uplift of the maritime industrial base and manages Defence’s presence in Australia’s principal shipyards. This includes the development of policy frameworks and workforce initiatives, management of shipyard facilities, and effective governance, assurance and oversight of ship construction activities.
