Defence engages the public through outreach and training, helping inform and educate stakeholders on how to meet their obligations under Australia’s defence export control laws.

Awareness training

Online training is offered via Defence's Learn eXcel Perform (LXP) to assist in understanding when permits are required and aid regulatory compliance.

Outreach program

Defence hosts virtual and face-to-face sessions about Australia’s defence export controls framework. These provide guidance to support compliance, including for the changes introduced in the Defence Trade Controls Amendment Act 2024.

Upcoming events

Defence is delivering targeted outreach sessions to support stakeholders’ compliance with the new controls by the end of the transition period on 1 March 2025. These sessions include:

  • Deep dives (completed): Short webinars focused on key topics.
  • Information sessions (completed): Combined sessions with government partners tailored to individual sectors.
  • In-person roadshows: Events across Australia targeted towards individuals responsible for compliance.

In-person roadshows currently planned for Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, Perth). Events will be arranged according to demand. Invitations with session times will be sent closer to the date.

Defence also held 10 national outreach sessions from July – September 2024. One of these introductory information sessions can be viewed at the Australian Academy of Science website.

Stakeholder engagement sessions

Defence offered 1-1 engagement sessions for stakeholders from September – November 2024 to discuss the AUKUS licence-free environment and new offences. 54 sessions were facilitated, with over 300 questions answered.

1-1 sessions are currently paused while wider outreach events are conducted ahead of the 1 March 2025 compliance deadline.
