Setting a new challenge for aviators

6 June 2025

Air Force is stacking on strength, with powerlifting as its newest sport.

Set to launch this year, the initiative includes competitions in bench press, squats and deadlifts, along with training sessions and development camps aiming to build a community of lifters from beginners to elite athletes.

It will initially run under Air Force Sports, with hopes of expanding to offer coaching, official recognition and duty participation.

Inspired by similar programs in the US and UK militaries, the association hopes it will mirror their success and growth.

President of Air Force Powerlifting Squadron Leader Evan McCloy said the sport was about more than lifting weights.

“The biggest thing we’re trying to build is community – a place where people can challenge themselves and support each other,” Squadron Leader McCloy said.

“You don’t need to be an elite athlete to get involved. If you bench press once a week, you can compete.”

Several Air Force personnel are already competing at national and international levels, including Wing Commander Sarah Wheal, who placed seventh in the world at the recent World Bench Press Championships.

“We’ve got people aiming for world titles and others just looking to improve their strength, there’s space for everyone,” Squadron Leader McCloy said.

The organisation hopes to team up with civilian powerlifting groups so Defence members can join more events across the country.

This would mean Air Force lifters could be part of bigger competitions and feel connected to the wider lifting community.

Powerlifting’s introduction adds to the growing variety of niche sports gaining traction within the ADF.

“It’s another way for our people to stay motivated, connected and push themselves outside of the usual PT routine,” Squadron Leader McCloy said.
