Run Army returned to Townsville on April 6, with almost 3000 participants making it the biggest event since it started in 2022.
Participants took part in either a 5km or 10 km run or walk to raise money for Legacy.
Run Army president, Major General (retd) Jake Ellwood, said it was about more than running.
“It’s about coming together as a community to promote health, resilience and support for those who serve and protect us,” Major General Ellwood said.
He noted the unity of the coastal community and the relationship between the ADF and emergency services.
“Townsville has always been a city of strength and spirit, as we have seen after the most recent flooding, with troops and emergency services working together; this event showcases that beautifully,” he said.
Veterans, families and their four-legged friends ran through iconic landmarks such as Jezzine Barracks, Anzac Memorial Park and along The Strand.
'It’s about coming together as a community to promote health, resilience and support for those who serve and protect us.'
Townsville’s Run Army event director Lieutenant Colonel Simon O’Regan said it had quickly become a highlight on the Townsville running and fitness calendar.
“It’s an opportunity for people of all fitness levels to challenge themselves, connect with others, and contribute to a cause that truly makes a difference,” Lieutenant Colonel O’Regan said.
Funds raised during the event will go to Legacy and nominated emergency services charities supporting Queensland Ambulance, Queensland Police, Indigenous Marathon Foundation, Queensland State Emergency Service, Surf Life Saving and Fire Fighters Cancer Foundation.
Commander 3rd Brigade, Brigadier Ben McLennan, said it was an honour to host the event at Jezzine Barracks and to witness the growing support from the Townsville community.
“There’s no doubt Townsville is Australia’s premier garrison city and events like this demonstrate how we unite as a community for a great cause, to support our dedicated emergency services and North Queensland Legacy.”
Major General Ellwood encouraged everyone to get involved and to put it on the calendar for next year.
“Whether you run, walk, or cheer from the sidelines, your participation matters. Together, we can make a positive impact and celebrate the values that unite us,” he said.
Run Army activities were scheduled this month in Adelaide, Brisbane, Hawaii, Perth, Puckapunyal, Sinai, Singleton and Sydney, with two more scheduled – Karratha on May 4 and Darwin on May 30.
