Rhythm with the blues

7 April 2025

The Americans provided the rhythm and the Australians brought the blues for a unique performance at the Australian International Airshow.

The Royal Australian Air Force Band and the Pacific Air Forces (PACAF) Band came together for a joint performance in front of a huge audience, highlighting the deep ties between the two nations.

Taking to the stage was RAAF Band member, Corporal Chloe Bruer-Jones, who was proud to represent Australia.

“It’s really incredible to meet so many talented musicians from a culture that’s so similar to ours, yet has so many interesting differences. We are from different militaries, but come together to achieve the same goal,” she said.

“I feel really proud to be out the front of our combined band with the other US Air Force singers. We really vibe with each other, and their professionalism and audience engagement skills are second to none. It’s been a fantastic experience.”

RAAF and PACAF bands blended vocals and dance moves – Australians and Americans are used to working together so it was no surprise that this performance was in tune.

The show underscored the unifying power of music, serving as a universal language that brings people together, fostering camaraderie and reinforcing shared values.

“I think music is the language of the soul – it connects with every human being on a deep level,” Corporal Bruer-Jones said.

“So when two bands from different militaries sing music together, it really represents a profound connection between two nations – and it’s indisputable to everyone watching.

“It’s clear that we are stronger alongside our allies, and that we help each other embody some of the most important military values: freedom, precision, unity and strength. Music is only one of the many ways in which we can show that we’re stronger together.”

PACAF band Chief Master Sergeant Heather Kirschner will say she has the best job in the world, but this event was special – a memory that will stay with her.

“Our team is halfway through our time in Australia, and our most memorable experience so far has been performing with the outstanding professionals of the RAAF Band,” she said.

“The collaborative energy we shared on stage and the connections we formed with both the band and our international audience made it truly unforgettable.”

After the show came the reviews: “I’m thrilled to see such an incredible performance,” said one attendee. “The synergy between the musicians was great, I loved the songs.”

The joint performance at the Australian International Airshow was more than just a musical showcase – it was a symbol of unity, cooperation and the enduring alliance between Australia and the United States.
