Navy bounty for Pirate Ship Foundation

2 April 2025

A rare opportunity to board a Navy submarine has raised $16,000 for childhood brain cancer research.

The exclusive experience, auctioned to the highest bidder, offered an unprecedented look inside HMAS Collins, featuring a private lunch and behind-the-scenes tour.

The event began with a VIP helicopter transfer from Jandakot Airport to HMAS Stirling, courtesy of Corsaire.

Commanding Officer Stirling Captain Ken Burleigh welcomed guests and provided a briefing about the base and the crucial role of submarines in Australia’s defence.

The guided tour of Collins was the highlight and guests enjoyed a three-course lunch on board, prepared by Collins’ highly skilled chefs.

Auction winner Adriano Leon described the experience as inspiring and meaningful.

"This was a remarkable way to showcase the dedication and professionalism of our submariners while supporting an important cause," Mr Leon said.

"It is a privilege to contribute to efforts that bring meaningful change to children and their families."

All proceeds from the auction were donated to The Pirate Ship Foundation, a Perth-based organisation for research into childhood brain cancer.

Commander Submarine Force, Commodore Dan Sutherland, emphasised the strong bond between Navy and the broader community.

“The generosity of the bidders and the wider community’s support will have a tangible impact on vital research,” Commander Sutherland said.

“The Submarine Force is proud to have contributed to such an important outcome."
