The Australian Air Force Cadets (AAFC) showcased their talents with a display at the Australian International Airshow 2025.
Attendees were able to test their skills against the Air Force Cadets in a paper plane race and bed making competitions, or fly a Pygmy drone through an obstacle course. Also on display their Diamond DA40 NG aircraft, programmable Codrone drone and the advanced Anafi Parrot drone that allows Air Force Cadets to receive a CASA operator accreditation as part of the Remote Pilot Aircraft Training School.
Cadet Under Officer Janethri Koralagama said that getting to support community events, like the Australian International Airshow, is always a highlight.
“Getting to meet all the amazing people and form connections is really special," Cadet Under Officer Koralagama said.
“We get to talk to so many different Defence personnel, industry partners and cadets from other states and units.”
Cadet Under Officer Koralagama joined Air Force Cadets in 2021 after attending the Australian International Airshow in 2019.
“My dad originally convinced me to go through the Cadets display," Cadet Under Officer Koralagama said.
“Speaking to the cadets about their experiences and the opportunities to grow and challenge myself made me realise that this is something I would be interested in.
“As soon as I was old enough, I joined the Air Force Cadets.”
Cadet Warrant Officer Jackson Burns who also joined Air Force Cadets in 2021, decided to join after hearing about the program from a family friend.
“Originally I joined Cadets as a way to help me on my path to becoming a civilian pilot,” Cadet Warrant Officer Burns said.
“After 5 years with the cadets and experiencing the culture and lifestyle of the Air Force has motivated me to apply for full time service.”
Cadet Warrant Officer Burns is in the process of applying to attend the Australian Defence Force Academy, Officer Aviation pathway with the goal of becoming a be a pilot in the Royal Australian Air Force.
Both Cadets stated the leadership skills and confidence they have obtained during their time in the Air Force Cadets has been invaluable.
“The Cadets create a sense of belonging, a feeling you are part of something great,” Cadet Warrant Officer Burns said.
“At every activity we attend, we’re all together; wearing the same uniform, going through the same experiences and creating lifelong friendships.”
