Army reservist Private Mitchell Beggs believes he has struck the perfect balance of adventure, service and family life.
The high school teacher in Casino, who is an infantry soldier with the Lismore-based 41st Battalion, the Royal New South Wales Regiment (41 RNSWR), said the flexibility and support provided by 41 RNSWR had allowed him to build a life that fits his passions.
“Our chain of command has always had that family-first approach,” Private Beggs said.
“Being largely an Army Reserve unit they are very aware we all have our civvie careers, but they are also big on professionalism and supportive of us developing good careers as reservist soldiers.
“They also understand my desire to travel – I was away six months with the family last trip, working at schools in far north NT, WA and Queensland, and I’d fly back to take part in exercises with the ‘41’.”
Private Beggs said it was a challenge for many 41 RNSWR personnel balancing family and Army commitments during the recent threat posed by Tropical Cyclone Alfred, but the unit made sure all personnel were taken care of.
“It was interesting having that choice of making sure my family in Casino was safe and coming over to Lismore to support and prepare, and knowing if the flood hits then I’m locked out from my family,” Private Beggs said.
“The 41 were awesome; they made sure that your family were safe and you felt supported and if you could give an effort then we could come in and build the team here.
“The communication within the team was good, too. We had support for those who were trapped or locked out and made sure to keep up comms and ensure they were all good.”
Beyond the support offered by the unit, Private Beggs said 41 RNSWR was made up of good people who shared some great experiences.
