Welcome to the Top End

19 February 2025

If you are newly posted to Darwin, strap in, you’re about to find out just how much is on offer in the Northern Territory.

What people don’t realise is they are on the doorstep of the best Australia has to offer.

Defence Member and Family Support (DMFS) held their Welcome to the Top End expo on February 8 at the Darwin Convention Centre, bringing together both new and repeat posters to the Top End.

The expo is a chance to see what the tip of the country has to offer, and even for those who have been here for some years, there is always something new.

Private Dewa Butkus has lived in Darwin since 2017 and attended the event for the first time.

“I didn’t know what to expect, but there is a lot more going on up here than I initially thought,” Private Butkus said.

“From being on and off in Darwin for the past eight years and seeing the sports and community events that are here, even for the kids, is really good.”

Newcomers were greeted with stalls and activities that enticed them to get out and experience the joys of northern Australia.

'There is no better garrison town than Darwin, and the expo shows how well we are supported by the local community.'

DMFS Area Manager for the Northern Territory, Di Elson, said the event gave the Darwin Defence community, and their partners and friends, a soft landing into the Territory.

“They get to see what’s on offer, choose an adventure with a respective sporting or community group and really take the opportunity to see what’s up here,” Ms Elson said.

“The partners of Defence members are really vital for employment and the prosperity of the Territory.

“It was also a great opportunity for single members to reconnect with sports and hobbies, and integrate into the community.”

Commander 1st Brigade, Brigadier Doug Pashley, said the event was a great way for families to connect with one another and share ideas about what they could do together.

“The day was about showcasing the unique opportunities that exist for Defence families that are living in the Northern Territory,” Brigadier Pashley said.

“There is no better garrison town than Darwin, and the expo shows how well we are supported by the local community as well as what members can sink their teeth into in the Territory.”

Defence provides a range of services, assistance and resources to support ADF members and their families.
