Historic brigade lowers its flag
Following the announcement of Army’s restructure, the illustrious 6 Brigade was disestablished at a ceremony on November 20. It’s proud and diverse history goes back to the Gallipoli and Western Front campaigns of World War 1. It was originally formed in Victoria as part of Australia’s 2nd Division in February 2015.

New tanks start rolling in
Trainees on the new Abrams M1A2 main battle tank have given it the thumbs up. The first conversion course on the tank was held at Puckapunyal in October and November. About 130 soldiers and officers learned the ins and outs of the new tank before the first of 75 M1A2s begin to enter service early next year with the 2nd Cavalry Regiment.

Black Hawks put through their paces
Soldiers from 2nd Commando Regiment used the new Black Hawk helicopters for counter-terrorism training across the greater Sydney region in November. 10 UH-60M Black Hawks have been delivered to Australia, with the last of the 40 due for delivery by 2030.

Ultimate pressure test for medics
Medics faced a variety of scenarios under trying conditions on Exercise Rendezvous Acacia. It was held in September at Wide Bay Training Area after 16 months of planning. Inspired by training exercises overseas, medics had to use opportunistic evacuation platforms to extract casualties.

Combined selection a first for SOCOMD
Special Operations Command ran a combined selection course for the first time. About 250 candidates from across the Australian Defence Force travelled to the Bindoon Training Area in Western Australia in early May for the 2024 Special Forces Common Selection Course.
