More than 200 members and guests commemorated 6th Brigade’s history at the Montbrehain Dinner on November 20.
Chief of Army Lieutenant General Simon Stuart, Regimental Sergeant Major-Army Warrant Officer Kim Flemingham (retd) and serving former brigade commanders and regimental sergeant majors, joined Commander 6th Brigade Brigadier Deane Limmer and members of the brigade for the event.
Two weeks later, members of Headquarters 6th Brigade gathered at Gallipoli Barracks in Enoggera to witness the brigade’s flag being lowered for the last time.
On December 2, 6th Brigade’s seven units transitioned across multiple brigade force structures.
1st Military Police Battalion, 6th Engineer Support Regiment, 12th Chief Engineer Works and 19th Chief Engineer Works transitioned to 17th Sustainment Brigade.
'I invested in making the disestablishment of our brigade the happiest journey it could possibly be – doing the right thing by our people is so profoundly important.'
16th Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery, transitioned to 10th Brigade, where it will be joined by 1st Intelligence Battalion and 7th Signal Regiment in late 2025.
As an interim measure to allow 10th Brigade to focus on integrating air and defence missile systems with new long-range fires capabilities, 1st Intelligence Battalion and 7th Signal Regiment are Direct Command Units of 1st (Australian) Division.
Commander 6th Brigade Brigadier Deane Limmer said it had been a challenging year.
“I’m not going to lie; it hurt to be posted away from family and be asked to close down something so wonderful as this brigade,” he said.
“It’s one of the hardest tasks I’ve been given during my time in Army.
“I invested in making the disestablishment of our brigade the happiest journey it could possibly be – doing the right thing by our people is so profoundly important.”
After the 6th Brigade flag was lowered for the last time on December 6, Brigadier Limmer presented a framed copy of the flag to the President of the Gallipoli Barracks Mess Committee, Lieutenant Colonel Rory Hale, in recognition of the brigade and all who served in it.
