ADV Reliant has visited the Pacific nation of Palau to mark 30 years of diplomatic relations with Australia.
Reliant is Australia’s Pacific support vessel and provides a unique capability as a whole-of-government vessel, primarily operating in Australia’s near region.
During the visit from November 22 to 27, the crew held corrosion control training with Palau’s Division of Marine Law Enforcement to help maintain PSS Remeliik II, a Guardian-class patrol boat gifted by the government in 2020 under the Pacific Maritime Security Program.
They also put on a strength training demonstration with equipment provided by ADF Sport, and teamed up with embassy staff to clean up a beach on one of Palau’s UNESCO world-heritage listed islands.
Lieutenant Commander BJ Glover is Reliant’s Naval Liaison Officer.
He said Australia and Palau shared a bond as stewards of the ocean, protecting the ecosystem for current and future generations, and Reliant was key to Australia’s support throughout the region.
“Reliant provides crucial aid in enforcing maritime laws, conducting surveillance to deter illegal fishing and offering disaster relief,” Lieutenant Commander Glover said.
“Its presence enhances the security and sustainability of our shared waters, helping protect valuable marine resources and strengthening the resilience of our island communities.”
Reliant also hosted VIPs, including the President of Palau, politicians and the Australian ambassador for a barbecue and tours of the ship.
Reliant is an auxiliary ship crewed by ADF personnel and contracted operators. It provides regional support through search and rescue, surveillance, training and mentoring.
