A spike in competition for volleyball cup

30 September 2024

The space echoed with cheers as 15 teams from HMAS Albatross competed fiercely on the volleyball courts.

Competitive spirit was not the only thing being ‘set’ to a new high, with morale being elevated in equal measure.

Named in honour of Sir John Lawrence Baird, the 8th Governor-General of Australia, and his wife, Lady Stonehaven, who christened HMAS Albatross I in 1928, the monthly competition embodies a rich tradition of community spirit.

Beyond the thrill of victory, the events serve a dual purpose: boosting morale, and strengthening teamwork and cohesion among personnel.

Physical training instructor Petty Officer Jesse Edwards said it was a privilege to be a part of the event.

“It is so amazing to think it is my job to make days like today to happen,” Petty Officer Edwards said.

During this year’s Lord Stonehaven Cup events, the collective efforts of physical training instructor staff and partnering charitable organisations raised more than $2000.

These funds directly contributed to improvements in the junior sailors' mess and subsidised veteran wellbeing programs, while raising awareness of the charities in the local area.

Chief Petty Officer Matthew Thompson said it was about more than walking away with a victory on the court.

“These competitions aren’t just about winning. They remind us that teamwork and camaraderie are the backbone of what we do as an organisation,” he said.

In the preliminary final, the rallies were fierce between two equally matched teams, with Training Authority – Aviation (TA-AVN) securing a spot in the final, culminating in a spike past a blocking opponent from 822 Squadron Phoenix.

As the ball hit the ground, the court erupted in cheers as TA-AVN notched another hard-fought victory.
