Army Reserve soldiers from 11th Brigade set aside time from Exercise Austral Shield 2024 to join locals at the annual Cairns Show.
The soldiers set up a show of their own, showcasing Army equipment, weapons and the Hawkei light protected mobility vehicle.
They showed members of the public over the Hawkei and answered questions about the weapons, while talking about Army Reserve service and the part-time opportunities available.
Major Dan Farrands, of 31st/42nd Battalion, Royal Queensland Regiment, was surprised at the public's response.
“The Cairns community has been great. You can see the genuine affection for the military from the people we’ve seen today,” Major Farrands said.
A former full-time officer, Major Farrands transferred to the Reserve after a career of more than 20 years. He now works for the Endeavour Foundation as a community senior manager.
“Balancing two careers can be a challenge at times, but you do it because you love it and believe in what you do,” Major Farrands said.
Exercise Austral Shield is being held across northern Australia in Cairns, Darwin, Derby in Western Australia and on Christmas Island until July 28.
Reservists from 2nd (Australian) Division are testing their readiness across northern Australia to counter a domestic security threat.
