Members of the 1st Armoured Regiment marched from the City Bridge to St Peter’s Cathedral in Adelaide in July to complete the relocation of the regiment’s guidon and first standard from Lone Pine Chapel at Robertson Barracks in the Northern Territory.
It was the first time the regiment’s soldiers and officers had marched through Adelaide City alongside two M1A1 Abrams main battle tanks and two Australian light armoured vehicles (ASLAVs).
Commanding Officer of the 1st Armoured Regiment Lieutenant Colonel Michael Henderson said the relocation enabled members of the regiment to be physically closer to the sacred symbols and reflect on their history.
“Our first guidon and our first standard have been with the regiment since 1956 and 1981,” Lieutenant Colonel Henderson said.
“It is important to be able to make these special items available for viewing to the public, to our own serving soldiers, and to our veterans, and so we have brought them down from Darwin to Adelaide, which is the home of the regiment.
“It’s an absolute honour for me as the commanding officer of the regiment to be able to undertake this task.”
Troop corporal 1st Armoured Regiment Lance Corporal Cody Wright said all members involved in the parade felt a sense of pride.
“I was very proud to march alongside my peers,” Lance Corporal Wright said.
“This was a great opportunity to display our people and capability to the Adelaide community.”
In 2022, the 1st Armoured Regiment transferred from the 1st Brigade in Darwin to the 9th Brigade in Adelaide.
