ADF project management personnel have been working alongside Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) and Fijian industry to deliver the Maritime Essential Services Centre in Lami, Fiji.
The bilateral initiative was announced on July 13 by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Fijian Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama.
Once completed, the centre will serve as a multipurpose building designed to enhance Fiji’s maritime capabilities to protect local fishing industries, enhance natural disaster assistance and rescue capabilities, and enhance Suva Radio service.
Work began on August 31 to level the site in preparation for construction.
Australian Army Captain Peter Walsh, with 19 Chief Engineer Works, said ADF and RFMF personnel had worked shoulder to shoulder, forging strong ties with industry counterparts.
“It’s really important for us to work together and give back to the region,” Captain Walsh said.
“Not just that; it’s also important for us to collaborate with Fijian industry as we build facilities that will actively empower their people.
“This is one of many projects where we dig deep and work with our neighbours to create something important.”
It is expected the centre will be completed in 2024.
