Growing up in the town of Beauty Point in northern Tasmania, Leading Seaman Jake Beams had big dreams of an exciting career and travelling the world.
Enlisting at Anglesea Barracks in 2011, Leading Seaman Beams’ travel began immediately with initial entry training at Navy’s Recruit School at HMAS Cerberus in Victoria.
He trained to become a Combat Systems Operator at HMAS Watson in Sydney and has since served in the Middle East and South-East Asia.
This weekend, Leading Seaman Beams returns to Tasmania aboard HMAS Hobart as she sails into the River Derwent to take part in the 183rd Royal Hobart Regatta.
“It’s a special feeling, returning back to Tasmania in one of the most capable ships in the Fleet,” Leading Seaman Beams said.
“There are 10 Tasmanians on board, and we’re all excited to show off our home state to our 213 shipmates.”
It is only the second time the ship has visited Tasmania since she commissioned in 2018.
The Royal Hobart Regatta is one of Tasmania’s biggest community events and is proudly supported by the ADF.
In 2021, the ADF will provide Hobart at anchor in the River Derwent as a backdrop for the event.
The ADF will also provide three aerobatic displays by the Royal Australian Air Force’s Roulettes and a fly-past by a P8-A Poseidon, as well as live performances by the Australian Army Band – Tasmania, and Royal Australian Navy Band – Tasmania.
Commanding Officer Hobart Commander Andrew Pepper, who also grew up in Tasmania, is looking forward to sharing the event with his crew.
“The Royal Hobart Regatta is going to be a great event,” Commander Pepper said.
“We have the bands playing and fly-pasts by the RAAF Roulettes and P8A Poseidon – and Hobart will be in the thick of it, surrounded by power boats, wooden boats and the Trans Derwent Swim.
“It is an exciting event to be a part of.”
