Task Group Afghanistan’s up-armoured unimog and protected mobility vehicle fleets have a new home to support their maintenance and upkeep with a deployable field workshop.
Vehicle fleet manager Corporal David Seymour said the establishment of the new field workshop was an important capability to ensure mission success in Afghanistan.
“It was a full team effort from a range of task group members, including Theatre Command Group-10, Force Support Element-12 and Force Protection Element-13,” Corporal Seymour said.
“I am excited to be part of the first Hamid Karzai International Airport workshop and look forward to continuing to provide effective maintenance support to Task Group Afghanistan.”
The workshop was opened on August 5 by Commander Task Group Afghanistan Brigadier Ed Smeaton, along with fellow Corps members.
Brigadier Smeaton, a member of the Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineer Corps, said the field workshop was an important milestone in improving self-sufficiency, as previously used facilities were no longer available.
“The opening of this facility will enable Task Group Afghanistan to better support the Resolute Support Mission by ensuring crucial force protection equipment is maintained and ready to go at a moment’s notice,” Brigadier Smeaton said.
Operation Highroad is the ADF’s commitment to Afghanistan. Since 2001, Australia’s mission in Afghanistan has been to support the Afghan Government help contain the threat from international terrorism. Australia contributes about 200 ADF personnel to the NATO-led Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan as part of Operation Highroad.
