The Australian Defence Force (ADF) offers many different opportunities for Indigenous Australians that are interested in joining the Navy, Army or Air Force.
If you are interested in a career in the ADF the Defence Force recruiting website can provide information about jobs and opportunities and assist you in identifying the right career for you.
Defence acknowledges that undertaking full time employment can be difficult, particularly when you are isolated from family and your community. The ADF provides a number of support services including career development pathways and opportunities and supportive conditions that recognise cultural requirements.
We also have specialist teams available who will mentor and support you throughout the recruiting process.
Indigenous Pre-Recruit Program
The Indigenous Pre-Recruit Program (IPRP) is a six week residential course for young Indigenous adults focusing on four key areas:
- Physical fitness
- Character development
- Cultural appreciation.
By the end of the course you will have the skills, knowledge and confidence to continue on to a successful full-time career in the ADF.
Navy Indigenous Development Program and Army Indigenous Development Program
The Navy Indigenous Development Program (NIDP) and Army Indigenous Development Program (AIDP) are for young Indigenous adults that want to join the ADF but who may be challenged by reading, writing or fitness.
The NIDP / AIDP are five and a half month residential courses that focus on six key skill areas:
- Language, literacy, and numeracy
- Military skills
- Physical fitness
- Vocational education and training
- Cultural appreciation
- Leadership and character development.
By the end of the course you will have the skills, knowledge and attitude to continue on with a full-time career in the ADF. What's more, we'll pay you for everyday you're on the course.
If you decide that a full-time career in the ADF is not for you, then opportunities in the Australian Defence Force Reserves or other choices may be open to you.
