The diversity of military training for operational service is such that Defence Training Areas inclusive of Permanent (Land) Live Fire Training Facilities or Military Ranges can differ significantly dependent upon the type of training required to be conducted. These live fire range facilities are designed and constructed to provide a safe and fit for purpose structure/s to enable firing of Individual Weapons (IW), Light Support Weapons (LSW), Machine Guns and Service Handguns by individuals and groups. These facilities also include demolition training, high explosive support weapons firing, the engagement of targets or target areas by Armoured Vehicles and Proof and Experimental facilities. Live fire training facilities are normally constructed based on justified user requirements and consist of temporary or permanent facilities for the conduct of live fire training.
They are located within designated training areas, have fixed Range Danger Areas and are subjected to the mandatory range safety board process. They have specified Range Standing Orders (RSO) in place and have a current Certificate of Range Safety Compliance issued. They are also subject to a scheduled technical and non-technical inspection regime and normally have long term airspace restrictions.
Information contained within this Permanent (Land) Live Fire Training Facility Design Handbook is to provide advice and guidance for live fire range designers and developers. It provides specific design features inclusive of safety critical specifications to allow for the production and presentation of design briefs. These standards and specifications are also to be applied to any major refurbishment or retrofit of a facility type. It also provides general and specific information to assist maintainers as well as technical and non-technical inspectors, in the performance of their tasks. Where there is doubt, where clarity is required, or if there are any proposed deviations from these specifications or standards, then consultation with RSCS is to be sought.
