HMAS Cairns
PFAS Investigation & Management
In August 2020, Defence completed a detailed environmental investigation into the presence of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) on and in the vicinity of HMAS Cairns. The investigation also assessed the storage and use of firefighting foam at the former WWII Royal Australian Navy Fuel Installation, located on Collins Avenue, Edge Hill.
All findings of the investigation are available on the publications page, including detailed reports and factsheets.
Defence has used the findings of the investigation to develop a PFAS Management Area Plan. This plan informs the activities Defence will undertake to manage, monitor and reduce the risks of PFAS exposure on, and around, the Base.
Investigation Timeline
More information about the investigation stages is available on the investigation and management process page.
