What We Do
Our core business, as described in our mandate, is to analyse foreign developments and produce intelligence assessments for the Australian Government and Defence. DIO’s main business areas are:
General Intelligence
Our Intelligence Analysts help Defence stay on top of threats by following foreign military, political, social and cultural developments that affect another country's ability to wage war or to threaten regional or international stability.
Scientific Intelligence
Our Scientific Intelligence Analysts use their unique expertise to assess and report on chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear issues that may pose threats to Australia.
Technical Intelligence
Technical Intelligence Analysts use their unique technical expertise to analyse and report on weapon systems and defence technologies that may pose threats to Australian forces.
The Guidelines to Protect the Privacy of Australian Persons regulate the communication and retention of intelligence concerning Australian persons.
