Scientific Intelligence Analysts
Can you tell the difference between a tremor and an underground nuclear test? Do you want to keep Australians safe from chemical and biological weapons? Are you interested in preventing the illicit flow of these dangerous materials?
Our Scientific Intelligence Analysts use their unique expertise to assess and report on chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear issues that may pose threats to Australia. DIO plays a critical role monitoring and preventing the proliferation of these capabilities. Illicit WMD programs hold some of the world’s most protected secrets and DIO needs Australia’s brightest minds to help us crack these programs and protect our nation’s security.
Our analysts draw on their scientific acumen and strong analytical skills, performing stimulating, challenging and rewarding work alongside some of Australia’s brightest and most innovative analysts and scientists. Our analysts evaluate and assess information and data from a variety of sources available to Defence intelligence, and also examine research papers and foreign media (including social media). This work is all the more challenging because the scientific picture is often incomplete, can be contradictory and varies in reliability. Scientific intelligence analysts need to work collaboratively, sifting all of the information, using technical tools, methodologies and their scientifically-informed judgment to understand and assess an adversary’s capability and intentions, and make forecasts about future actions.
Scientific Intelligence Analysts support Australian military forces deployed to the Indo-Pacific and the Middle East, operating across South-East Asia and the Pacific, training in Australia and overseas, and in support of Australia’s coalition partners. Scientific intelligence assessments also directly support Australian Government decision-makers, strategic policy and planning.
Scientific Intelligence Analysts will receive specialist training to prepare them to succeed in their career within DIO. Continued learning and development is encouraged as analysts progress through their career with DIO.
