As a scientist I researched vaccines for third-world diseases and I was determined that in my next career I would contribute to a cause I was equally passionate about. At DIO I have played a role in preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction – a cause I was surprised to discover that Australia is a world leader in!

I love science but felt my research career was becoming increasingly narrow. But at DIO the scope of scientific issues I encounter is boundless. My technical expertise is a valued asset and has provided me with a bridge to a new career that involves global events, politics, history and a whole new world of learning.

After seven years as a postdoctoral research scientist – and fed up with applying for research grants every three years – I made the decision to look for a job that provided new challenges but still had a science component to it.

Now 10 years into my 'second career' as an intelligence specialist in DIO, I have progressed from being a subject-matter expect to now leading a team of smart and motivated scientific intelligence analysts. During this professional journey I have learned the tradecraft of intelligence, briefed the highest levels of government – including ministers – and been offered many opportunities for engagement with scientists and intelligence professionals both in Australia and internationally.

And the bonus is, I still get that 'research thrill' when my team members assemble pieces of the intelligence jigsaw puzzle to come up with an analytical picture of real world events.
