Australian Defence Force Journal, issue no. 195

Publication: ADF Journal

This 2014 issue of the ADF Journal begins with an address by the Chief of the Defence Force, Air Chief Marshal Mark Binskin. He addresses his vision for the ADF and some of the challenges and opportunities he foresees for the ADF in the context of the 2015 Defence White Paper, the downing of MH-17, and Australia's ongoing role in Afghanistan.

Also in this issue, Lieutenant Colonel Tim Rutherford writes on the 'rise of the warrior geek', Associate Professor Abby Cathcart and colleagues from the Queensland University of Technology address some of the myths regarding flexible work arrangements in the ADF, and Dr Dirk Maclean and Squadron Leader Charles Vandepeer address the changing nature of 'high-consequence decision-making'.

There is a reprinted article by Professor Paul Mitchell of the Canadian Forces College on Canada's submarine program. And, Dr Euan Graham of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore provides an opinion piece on energy competition in the South China Sea.

There are three contributions from students of the Defence and Strategic Studies Course at the Australian Defence College. Captain Katherine Richards canvasses a number of naval related initiatives to improve Australia-India relations. Group Captain Matt Hegarty argues that improved collaboration with New Zealand in strategic air transport would offer Australia greater interoperability with its closest security partner in the South Pacific. And, Captain Michele Miller examines options for closer defence cooperation to strengthen regional security and build military capacity.

Colonel Michael Lehmann article addressing Chinese cyber capabilities was judged the 'best article' in this issue.
