Deployment Health Surveillance Program

The Deployment Health Surveillance Program  (DHSP) was a series of studies commissioned and funded by Defence that aimed to research the health and wellbeing of Australian Defence Force (ADF) veterans who deployed on active service overseas. It was conducted by the Centre for Military and Veterans’ Health (CMVH) as part of the DHSP.

International Force East Timor Pilot Project

The purpose of the International Force East Timor (InterFET) Pilot Project was to design and test the proposed methodology for the subsequent projects in the DHSP.

The Near North Area of Influence studies

The Near North Area of Influence studies comprised the following:

  • Solomon Islands Health Study
  • Bougainville Health Study
  • East Timor Health Study

Solomon Islands Health Study

The overall aim of the Solomon Islands Health Study was to examine whether the health of the veterans who deployed to the Solomon Islands differs from similar Defence Force personnel in several key areas:

  • mortality and cancer
  • post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • general health
  • general lifestyle factors.

Bougainville Health Study

The aim of the Deployed Bougainville Health Study was to conduct an investigation of the health status of all ADF personnel who deployed to Bougainville between November 1997 and August 2003 as part of Operations Bel Isi I & II. Results were compared to a group who were ADF members at the time but did not deploy on these operations.

East Timor Health Study

The aim of the East Timor Health Study was to conduct an investigation of the health status of a random sample of Australian Defence Force serving and ex-serving members. The investigation included those who deployed to East Timor between June 1999 and May 2005 on:

  • Operation Faber 
  • Operation Spitfire 
  • Operation Warden
  • Operation Tanager 
  • Operation Citadel 
  • Operation Spire. 

Results were compared to a group who were ADF members at the time, but did not deploy on these operations.
