LAND 121 Phase 3B/5B is delivering medium and heavy field vehicles, modules and trailers as well as the associated support systems. The vehicles will replace the Australian Defence Force's (ADF) Mack and Unimog vehicles which have been in service since the early 1980s, and will enhance performance and protection for the ADF’s logistic support capability by providing uniformity throughout the fleet.
The project will deliver a range of protected and unprotected configurations, each fitted for military radios and the ADF’s Battle Management System as part of the Army's move to a digitised capability, and will include:
- Heavy vehicles (equipment transporters)
- Medium and heavy recovery vehicles
- Heavy vehicle variants (self-loading hook-lift trucks, fuel trucks and tippers)
- Medium weight vehicle variants (tray, tray with crane, and tippers).
Phase 3B
The rollout of the initial tranche of vehicles, modules and trailers commenced in February 2017.
In December 2019, Initial Operating Capability (IOC) for LAND 121 Phase 3B was declared, with an air certification caveat.
Phase 5B
In June 2018, the Government approved a follow-on buy under LAND 121 Phase 5B for the acquisition of an additional 1,044 vehicles, 872 modules and 812 trailers, which will complete the Medium Heavy Capability replacement begun under LAND 121 Phase 3B.
LAND 121 Phase 5B deliveries commenced in 2019. Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles Australia and Haulmark deliveries are on schedule to be completed by Q2 2024.
