Overview

The aim of the Thinking Strategically course (TS) is to develop and enhance the skills and knowledge of mid-rank ADF officers and APS executives within Defence/Government to think strategically in order to enhance the organisation’s analytical, judgement, innovation and decision-making capabilities. These skills are relevant across any Department.

The Thinking Strategically course will contribute to the preparation of ADF officers and APS executives for strategy related appointments at the strategic and functional levels of the leadership and command structure.

This course is structured with 3 separate modules which include elements individual self-study, online learning and residential periods. 

This is a 10 week part time blended course, run once a week from 19.30-20.30 on-line plus three 1-2 day residential sessions at ADC in Weston ACT or on-line. Generally two courses are conducted each year, April to June and September to November.

Selection

While the courses are unclassified, participants do need a current baseline clearance.

Military and ADF APS

Audience. APS6 to EL2, as well as ADF E8/9 or O5/6 participants. A DEFGRAM will be released up to four weeks prior to course commencement. Individuals are to submit their nominations directly to AWC IAW instructions on the DEFGRAM. Subject to space available and course composition needs AWC will accept some or all nominations.



Other Government Agencies (OGA)

Normally DFAT, Home Affairs, ESA. AWC will release a Call for Nominations circular to selected OGA. The OGA is requested identify and select candidates and provide prioritised lists to AWC IAW the IAW instructions on the circular. Subject to space available and course composition needs AWC will accept some or all nominations.

Defence Industry

AWC will release a Call for Nominations circular to the Office of Defence Industry Support (ODIS) who advise Defence Industry partners through their monthly circular. Individuals will nominate IAW instructions on the circular. Subject to space available and course composition needs AWC will accept some or all nominations in consultation with ODIS.

International students

The course is currently not open to international students.
