Strategos – Strategic Theory for Practice course

Overview

The course provides students with the opportunity to consider intensively the subject of grand strategy and military strategic analysis. It draws upon the use of historical analysis, strategic studies concepts and the corpus of modern futures studies to improve interdisciplinary knowledge of strategy. It seeks to improve research and analysis methods for the professional study of present and future armed conflict.

Graduates of the course achieve a certification from Deakin University. This is a non-award completion of academic accreditation in the form of 'Recognition of Prior Learning' towards a Master’s of Arts in International Relations.

Learning outcome

By participating in the course, students will develop skills and knowledge in research and analysis methods from:

  • Exposure to the latest thinking in strategy and policy studies.
  • Introducing concepts and techniques that are relevant to the research and analysis work conducted within Defence, especially in the strategic policy area.
  • Education in the use of applied interdisciplinary knowledge on strategy and policy drawn from history, strategic and futures studies. 

Prerequisites

  • Successfully completed Australian Command and Staff Course, international military equivalent, or possess a Master’s degree in an appropriate discipline.
  • Endorsement from an Australian Defence Force Star Rank or Senior Executive Service officer.
  • Submit a ‘Pitch’ describing the relevance of the professional contribution to Defence in relation to modern future studies in strategy.
