Operations Based on Experience course

Overview

The CDF-sponsored Operations Based on Experience seminar is a one week seminar that prepares selected One star military officers and Defence Senior Executive Service Band One officers for key command, management and leadership appointments in Defence. The seminar is conducted at a Canberra area Defence site rated to at least Top Secret / NV2, AUSTEO; or if that is not possible at the Australian Defence College, Weston Campus in the Australian Capital Territory.

The curriculum is delivered primarily at Joint Professional Military Education Level Five. The curriculum includes senior Defence assessment of the international environment covering broad topic areas relating to capability, global operations, ADF Headquarters command and control, regional and international relationships, as well as personnel related matters.

Learning outcomes

Graduates of the seminar will gain an understanding of the current strategic and security environment, including the current spectrum of ADF operations and how they support Australia’s Grand Strategy, future challenges for Defence senior leadership and what role they have in addressing these challenges.

Selection

Military

One star or SES Band 1 rank. Selection is made by the Director of Senior Officer Management (DSOM), with nominations and advice from relevant Single Service Senior Office Management teams - DNSOM (Navy), DOCMA SOM (Army) and DSOM-AF (Air Force), to match allocations. Lists of nominated individuals are provided to the Seminar Director and COMDT AWC.

ADF APS

Selection is made by the Director of Senior Officer Management (DSOM), with advice from the DSOM SES team.  Lists of nominated individuals are provided to the Seminar Director and COMDT AWC.

Other Government Agencies (OGA) APS

Specific OGA occasionally receive a formal invitation from COMDT AWC or COMADC. However, as the aim of the OBOE seminar is preparation of selected One star military officers and Defence Senior Executive Service Band One officers for key appointments within Defence, the seminar is currently not open to OGAs.

International students

The seminar is not open to international students.
