Advanced Technology for Strategists course

Overview

This course aims to engage strategists within Defence/Government/Defence Industry with the key technologies that shape Australia’s strategic environment, now and into the future. Having completed the course, participants will have an effective understanding of key technologies and be able to access their strategic relevance. 

The course is conducted over 10 weeks as follows:

  • Stage 1 – Foundation Studies - Technology and Strategy – 2 days residential (course members can participate at AWC or online) 
  • Stage 2 – Engage with Technology - online – reading, watching recorded sessions and two by 60 minute sessions per week (over 6 weeks) from 9am -10am 
  • Stage 3 – Populate- the Framework - one day residential (course members can participate at AWC or online)
  • Stage 4 – Present the Framework - one day residential (course members can participate at AWC or online).

The course will cover key technology categories, including:

  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Cyber
  • Big Data and Data Analytics
  • Autonomous Weapon Systems
  • Human Augmentation
  • Materials and Additive Manufacturing
  • Space Technologies
  • Power Generation and Storage
  • Nuclear Energy/Nuclear Submarines
  • Hyper sonics and Energy Weapons
  • Quantum Computing and Sensing.

Learning outcomes

Participants will be able to:

  • analyse technological trends and the potential impact on joint warfighting and the profession of arms
  • appraise how technology shapes and influences future military planning
  • examine how technological trends may affect the ADF force structure in the future operating environment, how they are implemented and any impacts.

Selection

A current baseline clearance is necessary for all course participants.

Military and ADF APS

APS6 to EL2, as well as ADF E8/9 or O5/6 participants. A DEFGRAM will be released up to four weeks prior to course commencement. Individuals are to submit their nominations directly to AWC IAW instructions on the DEFGRAM. Subject to space available and course composition needs AWC will accept some or all nominations.



Other Government Agencies (OGA)

Normally DFAT, Home Affairs, ESA. AWC will release a Call for Nominations circular to selected OGA. The OGA is requested identify and select candidates and provide prioritised lists to AWC IAW the IAW instructions on the circular. Subject to space available and course composition needs AWC will accept some or all nominations.

Defence Industry

AWC will release a Call for Nominations circular to the Office of Defence Industry Support (ODIS) who advise Defence Industry partners through their monthly circular. Individuals will nominate IAW instructions on the circular. Subject to space available and course composition needs AWC will accept some or all nominations in consultation with ODIS.

International students

The course is currently not open to international students.
