Australian Defence Force members working under Operation Mazurka assist the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) in the Sinai, Egypt.
The Multinational Force and Observers Medal is an international military decoration awarded to military and observer members in recognition of honourable performance of duty with the MFO.
The MFO awards system recognises service by military and civilian members of the MFO, prime Sinai Support Contractor employees, and individuals or organisations from outside the MFO who make a particular contribution to the organisation. Service includes special recognition of outstanding acts or performance.
MFO awards are to be worn in accordance with national rules and regulations.
Eligibility
The medal is awarded for 6 months (minimum 170 days) of honourable duty with the MFO. Eligibility for the initial award will also be considered satisfied for those who:
- died during their service with the MFO
- were medically repatriated (incurred injuries or illness) due to MFO service
- completed a contingent tour of less than 6 months, as agreed between the Director General and the respective Participating State.
Design
The medal is bronze, round and bears the MFO emblem on the obverse, with the words United in Service for Peace on the reverse.
The medal set includes a miniature medal.
The ribbon is 1 3/8 inches wide of MFO orange colour, with a 1/4 inch white stripe centred between two 1/16 inch vertical green stripes.
The medal can be awarded only once. Each additional 6 months (minimum 17 days) period of service is denoted with consecutive numerals.
Approval to wear
The Australian Government has officially accepted the MFO Medal for wear by Australian Defence Force members.
The names of eligible members are sent to the Directorate of Honours and Awards on Routine Orders through administrative channels in theatre. The Routine Orders are verified before being processed for approval by the Governor-General. Once approval notification is received, PMKeyS is updated to reflect the award.
DH&A does not assess for this award and is not the awarding authority. Replacement medals are not issued by Defence. When a foreign award that has been approved for wearing by Defence is lost or stolen, members can obtain a replica from a medals dealer at their own expense.
To apply for approval to accept and wear foreign awards, submit an application with a certified true copy of the award certificate.
