The Defence estate includes places with natural values, places important to First Nations peoples, places significant for their Defence history and places that are important to Australia's history and cultural life.
The Defence Estate Heritage Strategy outlines Defence’s objectives and responsibilities for the management of heritage within the Defence estate and is a requirement under the Australian Government’s Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (EPBC Act).
The EPBC Act protects heritage on Commonwealth land and includes provisions to ensure the identification, protection, conservation and management of heritage values.
Information on how heritage is to be managed and maintained in accordance with our legislative requirements is provided in the Defence Estate Heritage Management Manual.
