Department of Health and Aged Care

For information about PFAS impacts on human health, visit the Department of Health and Aged Care. The department also provides information on the following:

  • Health Based Guidance Values for use in Australian PFAS site investigations and human health risk assessments, developed by the Department of Health and Aged Care, together with Food Standards Australia New Zealand.
  • PFAS Guidance Statements issued by the Environmental Health Standing Committee (enHealth) of the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee.

Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water

The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) lead Australia’s response to climate change and sustainable energy use, and protect Australia’s environment, heritage and water. DCCEEW collaborates with state and territory environmental agencies to strengthen the PFAS National Environmental Management Plan.

The department also manages the PFAS Australian Information Portal and is responsible for whole-of-government coordination and oversight of Australian Government responses to PFAS contamination.

State and Territory authorities

Each State and Territory has an Environment Protection Authority, or similar.

Defence works with these authorities in responding to PFAS contamination, including through sharing information and reports. Refer to the relevant authorities below to learn about each State or Territory’s local approach to PFAS contamination management.
