Larrakeyah Barracks Redevelopment

Overview

The Larrakeyah Defence Precinct, comprising Larrakeyah Barracks and HMAS Coonawarra, is located approximately 2 km west of Darwin central business district.

The Larrakeyah Barracks Redevelopment project and the Facilities to Support Naval Operations in the North project are being jointly delivered under the Larrakeyah Defence Precinct Redevelopment Program. Construction commenced mid-2018 and works are expected to be completed in early 2024.

This project addresses significant condition, capacity and compliance issues, and provides for future growth.

Community information

Defence recognises the importance of consulting with local residents, statutory authorities and other interested stakeholders on the project.

Government, local community, and industry groups have been consulted on the proposed works and are updated on the project's progress.

Project element Description
NORFORCE Facilities

New NORFORCE Precinct comprising headquarters, training and operational facilities as well as a workshop and vehicle shelters.

Electrical services infrastructure

Major upgrade of the Larrakeyah Defence Precinct's electrical supply and distribution system and new street and pedestrian lighting along Allen Avenue and the Base Entry Precinct. 

Portable water infrastructure

New potable water services infrastructure across most of the Larrakeyah Defence Precinct (except the residences and Living-In-Accommodation precinct).

Fire fighting infrastructure

New fire fighting water supply across most of the Larrakeyah Defence Precinct.

Sewer infrastructure

Upgrade of the Precinct's sewerage network.

Stormwater infrastructure

Upgrade of the Precinct's stormwater network to create to distinct catchment areas, eastern and western, discharging to the City of Darwin outlet and Darwin Harbour respectively. 

ICT infrastructure Upgrade of ICT infrastructure including a new core node and works to the pit and conduit system.
Shared User Facility New modern compact two-storey building with flexible office accommodation and training areas. 
Base Entry Precinct New Base Entry Precinct to improve security, access and traffic flow. 
Junior sailors' car park New carpark located in the vicinity of the Shared User Facility providing 300 car spaces for personnel, civilians and contractors.
