Defence held an information session in Darwin on 20 April 2026 to engage with the community on the Defence Audit and divestment of Stokes Hill Fuel Installation. Community members shared valuable local insights and feedback with Defence. This feedback will help inform transition planning and next steps.

Functions
Stokes Hill Fuel Installation was used from the 1920s until 2014 as a bulk fuel storage facility for Royal Australian Navy operations. The site ceased to operate in 2014 and was declared surplus in 2015.
This site has been vacant since 2014.
The site is contaminated due to its use as a former naval fuel installation.

History and heritage
Stokes Hill is located within the traditional lands of the Larrakia people.
The southern portion of the site is a registered sacred site and is protected by the Northern Territory Aboriginal Sacred Sites Act 2012.
