About the base

Prepare Officers and Sailors of the Royal Australian Navy to go to sea and to be a part of the team that contributes to Fleet commitments and outcomes - "to fight and win at sea". The Base is Navy's premier maritime warfare training establishment for all ranks from Junior Sailors to Commanding Officers.

Access

Only vehicles that have a pass, Defence vehicles, or resident's vehicles are allowed through the main gate. Exceptions are delivery vehicles or contractors carrying out work, this is managed at the access control barrier.

Major redevelopment undergoing which will bring changes to traffic direction and volumes, visitors are advised to gain up to date information from their host or the guards at the main gate.

All heritage sites are out of bounds. Access to the married quarters area are for residents and their visitors only.

Road rules

Speed limit is 25km/h throughout the base unless otherwise signposted and not to exceed 10km/h when overtaking formed military members.

Sirens will communicate information about the base security status and procedures. In the event you hear any of the following emergency warning tones, stop what you are doing immediately and follow the direction of your escort or ECO Warden. In the absence of direction, follow the procedures below and those detailed in the following pages of the National Base Induction.

Alert

Prepare to receive direction and maintain awareness.

Evacuation

‘whoop, whoop, whoop’ tone + ‘evacuate, evacuate, evacuate’ voice command

Exit building and assemble at predetermined assembly area. Remain at assembly area and await further direction.

Lockdown

Rapid short ‘beeping’ tone + ‘lockdown, lockdown, lockdown’ voice command

Follow the CLOSE procedure.

  • Close windows, blinds, doors and turn off lights.
  • Lock computers and put documents away.
  • Out-of-sight and minimise movement.
  • Stay silent and turn off phones.
  • Endure and maintain.

Stand down

Low-pitched ‘buzzing’ tone + ‘stand-down, stand-down, stand-down’ voice command

Resume normal activities.

Call 000 for life threatening, critical or serious situations.
