About the base
HMAS Penguin is part of the Navy’s Fleet Command and was commissioned on 14 July 1942. Its primary role today is to provide trained personnel to the Fleet and is the home of the ADF Diving School (ADFDS), the RAN Hydrographic School and other specialist units and medical facilities.
Access
Vehicle access requires a valid car pass, gained from the Access Control Office at the main gate.
The use of skateboards, roller skates, scooters and similar devices are banned at all times.
The catching and removing of fish and marine species at this establishment is prohibited at all times.
Visiting hours
7 am - 4 pm Monday - Thursday
7 am - 1 pm Friday
Road rules
Speed limit is 25 km/h throughout the Base unless otherwise signposted & 10 km/h in carparks. Vehicles are not to overtake formed military members.
Where signs are displayed ‘runners on road’ access by vehicle is prohibited. For urgent access driver must exit their vehicle and notify physical training instructor to be granted permission.

Sirens will communicate information about the base security status and procedures. In the event you hear any of the following emergency warning tones, stop what you are doing immediately and follow the direction of your escort or ECO Warden. In the absence of direction, follow the procedures below and those detailed in the following pages of the National Base Induction.
