A privacy impact assessment (PIA) is a review of an activity that identifies the impact it might have on the privacy of individuals, and sets out recommendations for managing, minimising or eliminating that impact.
Conducting a PIA helps Defence to ensure privacy compliance and identify better practice within the organisation.
As a Commonwealth agency, Defence has an obligation to conduct a PIA for all high privacy-risk activities and to maintain a PIA register for publication on the Defence website.
