Australia-Singapore Military Training Initiative

Training Areas

Under the ASMTI, Singapore will invest in Australia’s development and enhancement of training areas to meet the future needs of the Australian Defence Force and facilitate and increased presence of Singapore Armed Forces personnel conducting unilateral training in Australia.

The ASMTI is expanding and developing the existing Shoalwater Bay Training Area in Central Queensland, and has acquired and is designing a new training area near Greenvale in North Queensland. These training areas will be owned and managed by the Commonwealth through the Department of Defence.

Central Queensland

The existing Shoalwater Bay Training Area in Central Queensland is being expanded to the West. The Shoalwater Bay Training Area is approximately 100 kilometres North of Rockhampton. Defence has acquired in the order of 110,000 hectares of land for the expansion.

North Queensland

Defence has acquired and is designing a new training area near Greenvale in North Queensland. Greenvale Training Area is approximately 215 kilometres Northwest of Townsville and located on 310,000 hectares.

Establishing Defence Training Areas

Purchasing land is only one step towards establishing and expanding the training areas. There are a number of other steps Defence will take to design, build and use the training areas.

Managing Defence Training Areas

There will be ongoing logistics and land management requirements to support and sustain the training areas once they are operational.

Advanced Training Areas

The ASMTI will deliver advanced military training areas that benefit the Australian Defence Force, provide significant local economic opportunities and strengthen Australia’s Defence relationship with Singapore.
