Australia-Singapore Military Training Initiative

Community Engagement

Defence maintains a comprehensive program of community and industry engagement in Central and North Queensland.

This engagement enables Defence to understand the views of the community, industry and peak bodies and to use this knowledge to guide planning and implementation of the ASMTI.

Who Defence engages with

Defence regularly engages with landholders, industry, local government, Traditional Owners, peak bodies and the broader communities in Central and North Queensland to keep them updated on progress, highlight work opportunities and consult on implementation of the ASMTI.

How Defence engages

Defence uses a range of mechanisms to engage with community and industry. This includes community forums, industry briefings, workshops and one-on-one meetings with community and industry leaders.

Local engagement

Defence has a dedicated presence in Townsville to keep the community and industry informed.

A Defence Liaison Officer, Sean Hawkins, maintains close contact with landholders, industry, local government and peak bodies, and maintains regular engagement with businesses and communities in Central and North Queensland.

Industry engagement

Defence has a strong track record when it comes to local industry participation and both the Central and North Queensland communities have a long history of providing support to Defence. Singapore, too, has a long-standing presence in Central Queensland. For 30 years, the Singapore Armed Forces have worked with the Central Queensland community to support its training activities.

Consistent with the ASMTI’s Memorandum of Understanding, the Australian and Singaporean governments are committed to helping local businesses harness the opportunities associated with the ASMTI.

Defence will be engaging with local businesses and industry as each phase of the Initiative is implemented to build awareness of potential business opportunities and maximise the participation of local businesses.
