Defence will conserve soils to support current and future uses and minimise impacts to the environment.
Healthy soils are the foundation of a healthy environment. Key elements of soil health that may require management include: structure, erosion, nutrient levels and water holding capacity. Known issues are recorded in the Defence Soils Register in GEMS. Through management and monitoring of key issues such as acid sulphate soils, compaction, erosion, mass movement and salinity, Defence is able to facilitate the sustainable use of the estate and minimise environmental harm.
Implementation direction and requirements for undertaking certain environmental management activities can be found in the Landscape Management Manual (PDF 1 MB).
