PFAS Investigation & Management

In August 2019, Defence completed a detailed environmental investigation into the presence of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) on and in the vicinity of RAAF Base Edinburgh.

Defence is undertaking a range of remediation and management activities at RAAF Base Edinburgh, to remove PFAS from the environment and to further minimise PFAS migration from the base.

Management and remediation works are guided by the Edinburgh PFAS Management Area Plan, which was published in August 2019.

As part of the PFAS Management Area Plan, an Ongoing Monitoring Program is being implemented to monitor and track PFAS contamination.

Community update

In August 2019, Defence completed a detailed environmental investigation at RAAF Base Edinburgh. During the detailed environmental investigation, Defence undertook sampling of groundwater, surface water and bores within the Investigation Area.

The findings of the investigation were audited by an independent expert site contamination auditor. A factsheet providing details on the audit report was provided to the community in December 2020.

The auditor recommended that the South Australia Environment Protection Authority consider implementing a Groundwater Prohibition Area to prohibit or restrict taking groundwater in some off-base areas impacted by PFAS.

Defence is assisting the South Australia EPA in this process, including by providing information about the PFAS environmental investigation, and PFAS remediation and management activities to the community.

The South Australia Environment Protection Authority is now undertaking consultation about its proposed Ground Water Prohibition Area.

For more information on the proposed Groundwater Prohibition Area, please visit the South Australia EPA website.

Investigation Timeline

More information about the investigation stages is available on the investigation and management process page.
